Illegal dogfighting operation busted

Two Hampton men are accused of illegally selling dogs to an undercover officer with the intent that the dogs would engage in fighting. The men were arrested following an undercover operation conducted by Hampton Animal Control, Hampton Police Special Investigations Unit and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). During the operation, police say the suspects sold several Pit Bull Terrirers to an undercover officer for the purpose of fighting.
Kendal Lamonte Hargrove Jr., 18, and Robert Linwood Hymes, 38, both of Hampton, have been charged with three counts of Animal Fighting. Both men reside in the 3300 block of Marlborough Court.
Five dogs, some of which have scars consistent with dogfighting, and dogfighting paraphernalia were seized in the operation, according to the HSUS.
"Dogfighting is a despicable crime and we commend the Hampton Police Division Animal Control Unit for working diligently to put this alleged operation out of business," said Chris Schindler, manager of animal fighting law enforcement for the HSUS. "One of the dogs rescued was a victim for more than a decade; it’s good to know that the cycle of violence has ended for this helpless animal, and for the others."
The HSUS offers rewards of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person involved in illegal animal fighting.
Anyone with information about animal fighting criminals is asked to call 877-TIP-HSUS
The dogs seized in the operation will be evaluated for adoption.
