Neglected pit bull recovering from horrible case of mange

By Jennifer Nobilia, NBC 2

A year-and-a-half-old pit bull mix dog is recovering. Officials with Charlotte County Animal Control say the dog was a victim of the worst case of mange they have ever seen.
"The dog did not have any fur on it and it was a bit on the thin side - still active and playful, yet obviously in need of immediate medical care," said Kurt Truran of Charlotte County Animal Control. "It was covered in demodectic mange."
Truran says the dog "Clutch" had clearly been neglected by his owner for quite some time.
"Mange is basically mites that get under the skin. And because of that, they lose their fur. This dog did not have one spec of fur on it," said Truran.
Although Clutch is covered in painful scabs, he's being cared for at a local shelter.
Truran says he's doing well and that some day, he be ready for adoption.
"He's being treated with medicine and is actually growing fur," said Truran.
Clutch's recovery will take time, but everyone is hopeful he will some day find a loving home.
"He's got a good demeanor and he's playful. In my opinion, he's just absolutely a good pet," Truran said.
Animal abuse charges are now pending against his owner. When Clutch, recovers he will be available for adoption at the Charlotte County Animal Welfare League.
