A Louisville man has been charged with second-degree cruelty to animals -- a misdemeanor -- after police say he subjected a 5-year-old pit bull to cruel neglect.
Barnett told officers that the dog had dumped over his water bowl twice and "was not getting any more."
When police found the dog, it was unresponsive and laying on its side, so they immediately sprayed it with water.
Animal Control confiscated the dog so it could receive medical care from a veterinarian, as it was in "serious medical distress" from the heat, according to the police citation.
Police say Barnett showed "great contempt" for the dog, even in their presence.
They also say Barnett was under the influence of alcohol.
