Suspicions of animal cruelty raised

By Nick Bonham, The Pueblo Chieftain

Investigators don't know whether a dead dog with head wounds that was found in a taped box met with cruelty.
Two juvenile boys found the box about 8 p.m. near a sidewalk in the area of West 24th Street and Tuxedo Boulevard, according to Pueblo police.
The box was emitting a foul odor. Inside the box, which was bound with duct tape, was a plastic bag containing a dead female pit bull.
"Is it cruelty or is not cruelty? I don't know," Donna Straub, director of the Pueblo Animal Shelter said Thursday.
"Unfortunately, we get people who don't know what to do with (dead animals) so they just dump it. We do take in people's deceased animals. We wish they wouldn't dump them on the roadways."
Straub asked anyone with information that the dog may have been abused to call the animal shelter at 544-3005.
