Letter carrier recovering from dog attack in Houma

A postal worker is recovering from an attack by a pit bull dog in Houma.
The attack earlier this week left 55-year-old Benny Rhodes with severe injuries to both legs, police told The Courier newspaper. The 50-pound dog, nearly 2 years old, was taken to the Terrebonne Parish Animal Shelter, where, authorities said, it was to be killed.
Sgt. Dana Coleman, a Houma Police spokesman says the pet had escaped from a chain in its owner's unfenced yard.
The pit bull's owner was issued a summons for failure to restrain the dog. He faces a fine of up to $500 and up to six months in jail.
