Woman in critical condition after dog attack

By Dale Lezon, Houston Chronicle

A woman is in the hospital in critical condition with bites, an eye injury and a broken arm after dogs mauled her in South Houston. Laurie Schissler, 48, was injured in the Thursday night attack in the 800 block of Montana near Beaumont, said South Houston Police Chief Herbert Gilbert. Gilbert said Schissler, who is known to police as a transient in the area near where the attack occurred, was taken to Memorial Hermann-The Texas Medical Center. She was in critical condition on Friday. Gilbert said the woman has not said what may have led to the mauling. Police who responded to a 911 call found two pit bulls roaming near the area where the attack happened. They were taken to a city facility. Officials are unsure if they were involved in the attack. Gilbert said the canines may have been watchdogs at one of nearby businesses in the light-industrial area.
