Pitbull that attacked boy must die, judge rules

By Raymond Legendre, Daily Comet

A pitbull, whose unprovoked attack left a 12-year-old Larose boy hospitalized last month, will be killed this week, a district judge ruled this morning.

The dog named Duke bit the unidentified boy on his inner and outer thigh as he road his bike Sept. 27 on West 13th Street in Larose. Surgery was performed on his leg at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans, and he is expected to make a full recovery, his mother, Jaime Estay, said.
On Monday inside Judge Walt Lanier III's court, the dog's owner, Marie Bermudez, agreed with a petition by the Lafourche Sheriff's Office to have the animal put to death.
It will likely be killed Tuesday at the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter, sheriff's staff attorney Mike Jimenez said.
Bermudez faces possible fines or jail time for allegedly violating two parish ordinances, animals roaming at large and vaccination required. Her court date for the charges is Oct. 27.
