Group sues, claims dog was killed without cause
Animal activists gathered in Providence Saturday to protest alleged abuses at Providence Animal Control.
Members of Defenders of Animals and Friends of the Attleboro Animal Shelter picketed Providence City Hall Saturday afternoon to protest the city facility.
Dennis Tabella says Tyson the pitbull got away from his owners and was put down without Animal Control staff following the proper procedures, including looking for the dog's owners and a waiting period of five days.
Tabella and other members believe Tyson was killed simply for being a pitbull and that other animals have suffered the same fate. They hope their lawsuit will help bring a change in leadership and practices to the facility.
Providence Animal Control says Tyson was put down because he was suffering from the Parvo virus but Tabella rejects this claim.
Providence Animal Control was contacted several times Saturday for comment on this story, but no one returned a call to Eyewitness News.
