Child Severely Injured in Dorchester County Dog Attack

By Kye Parsons, WBOC

An 8-year-old girl sustained serious injuries after she was attacked by a dog in northern Dorchester County on Monday, police said. The incident occurred on 4320 Russell Road, as the child was walking home from the school bus stop, according to the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office.
Neighbors in the area assisted in getting the child free from the dog's bite and sheltered her until an EMS crew could respond. Due to the severity of her injuries, the child was flown to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore where she was treated and later released.
Police said that an investigation revealed that an owner of the dog is currently in jail and that a friend had been asked to care for the dog. The caretaker told deputies that the dog- which was described by police as a pit bull mix- got free and that he was no longer going to care for the dog and he wanted it destroyed. There were no records of vaccinations available, according to police.
The dog was taken into custody by Dorchester County Animal Control officers and euthanized. Its remains are being tested for rabies.
