Man fatally shoots self as authorities close in

By Guillermo X. Garcia, San Antonio Express-News

A man shot and killed himself Thursday as authorities sought to arrest him on an outstanding hot check warrant, his roommate said.
Craig Drimel, 44, fired a single bullet into the side of his head in the backyard of his roommate's residence in the 6200 block of Parkland Oaks on the Northwest Side, authorities said.
Doug Forson, who had known the one-time interior designer for more than 20 years, said Drimel had recently experienced a number of financial and health setbacks.
Forson said that for years Drimel founded and ran the San Antonio Boxer Rescue, an operation that rescued boxer dogs used to train pit bulls.
There were about 20 such dogs in Forson's garage Thursday afternoon. He was making arrangements with facilities in Austin and San Antonio to take the dogs.
Drimel told Forson that he would do anything to avoid going back to jail, even though “by missing a court date, he knew they were eventually going to come after him.”
Drimel initially ran from the residence when deputies showed up with an arrest warrant Thursday morning. But after a search, the deputy and Forson discovered Drimel's body slumped over in the back yard, a handgun close by, Forson said.
