Sickly puppy rescued from canal, death

From St. Petersburg Times

Someone didn't just try to get rid of their sickly puppy — they tried to drown her.
The emaciated 4-month-old pit bull terrier mix was found floating in a canal with a chain, lock, electrical cord and leather collar all wrapped around her neck, according to Pet Pal Animal Shelter.
"Instead of getting her medical help or feeding her, they tried to discard her," said Scott Daly, the shelter's executive director. "It's definitely intentional."
A good samaritan rescued the puppy from a canal off of Ninth Street S and 26th Avenue S, then took it to the shelter.
The samaritan saved the puppy from a "horrible death," Daly said. The dog was dehydrated, malnourished and suffering from a severe skin infection caused by the skin mite Demodex.
"She is very, very underweight," Daly said. "She has puss coming out of her skin."
The shelter named the dog Lotus, and she is now being treated there with antibiotics.
Anyone with information about the previous owner of this dog is asked to call (727) 328-7738. Callers can remain anonymous.
Lotus' progress can be tracked on Pet Pal Animal Shelter's Facebook page.

Puppy found in canal improving, has her own social media page

A puppy found floating in a St. Petersburg canal is not only getting better, but she's become a big hit on Facebook .
Lotus, a four-month-old Pit Bull mix, had more than 3,000 followers on her social media webpage on Monday morning.
An update, posted on the Facebook page said, "The puppy’s condition is continuing to improve... she has a hearty appetite and she is standing for longer periods of time."
Lotus, who was named after the floating flower, was found on Wednesday with an electrical cord, chain, lock and large leather collar wrapped around her neck.
When a good Samaritan found her, she was wrapped up and taken to a local animal shelter, where she's receiving care because she's malnourished, dehydrated and suffering severely an infection caused by Demodex, which is a skin mite.
"This puppy is lucky to be alive," said Scott Daly of Pet Pal Animal Shelter in St. Petersburg in a statement. "She did not get into her current physical condition overnight and if it wasn't for her rescuer pulling her out of that canal, she most likely would have died a horrible death."
If you have any information about the owner of Lotus, you're asked to call (727) 328-7738. You can remain anonymous.
