A 31-year-old woman faces felony cruelty to animal charges after she allegedly threw a puppy 50 feet to the ground from an apartment window in southeast Houston.
“He was doing pretty good when he left,” Newport said. “His eyesight is bad right now. He has a little wobble in his step.”
Court records show Nidra F. Billard is accused of hurling the 6-week-old pitbull, belonging to her boyfriend, to the partially paved courtyard below after he left the building following an argument.
The puppy suffered contusions and a broken blood vessel in its eyes, the documents said.
Newport said while BARC employees usually see abused animals that have been dropped off outside the facility’s gates, angry confrontations involving the pet’s owner often play a part in cruelty cases.
“Right after an argument, invariable, the animal does something to set them off,” he said.
Billard’s bond is set at $5,000; she faces up to two years in state jail if convicted and a $10,000 fine.
